Hi, I work at a university and we are looking at replacing our aging Cisco PPTP VPN infrastructure. We have started testing pfSense and so far it seems to be working out very well. One of our biggest challenges was to get Android devices to work with VP
So my idea is to have pfSense running on ESXi and have it connect to a VPN server. Then I will setup some static routes (to the VPN) in my router to point to the pfSense VM. If any client in the LAN wants to connect to the VPN it is rerouted to the pfSense VM. The VPN connection should be a site-to-site connection with IPsec.

VPN - Heavy use of any of the VPN services included in the pfSense software will increase CPU requirements. Encrypting and decrypting traffic is CPU intensive. The number of connections is much less of a concern than the throughput required. Still i can access the internet on OpenVPN client computer, i can access the pfSense ip both on OpenVPN subnet ( 10.10.255.1 ) and it's main IP (10.10.0.1). OpenVPN is an SSL based VPN - exactly what you asked about. In your initial post you said nothing about not wanting to have to install client software. If you want a browser based VPN then that's different, and not the question you asked ;) pfSense doesn't have any VPN solution that support browser based VPNs.
